Abstract :
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of regular exercise on the mental health in the elderly person. For this purpose, 200 elderly over 65 year old were assigned into 2 groups (regular exercise group 100 : non exercise group 100). Each group was consisted of 50 males and females respectively. The test of mental health was consisted with four section; self-rating anxiety scale (SAS), self-rating depression scale(SDS), self-esteem scale(SES), and life satisfaction index-wellbeing(LSI-W). The data was analyzed by the descriptive statistics(t-test) on significant level of α = 0.05. The results were as follows: 1) The male was higher than female on the self-esteem but female was higher than male on the anxiety. 2) The old elderly was higher than young elderly on the anxiety but young elderly was higher than old elderly on the depression, self-esteem and life satisfaction. 3) The anxiety and depression were higher in the elderly with being no good health than elderly with well-being, but self-esteem and life satisfaction were higher in elderly with wellbeing than elderly with no good health. 4) The regular exercise participation affected positive mental health which exercise could decrease the anxiety and depression otherwise increased self-esteem and life satisfaction in elderly people.
