  • Abstract
The system of television broadcasting in the US NTSC, was originally established in 1941, with color being added in 1953. In 1987, the US advanced television systems committee and the Federal communications commission initiated efforts to determine an appropriate system for delivering advanced television signals to viewers, with the initial effort being concentrated on terrestrial broadcasting. Other systems of delivery are also being considered, but with other users of the RF spectrum pressing for more access to the television spectrum expected to be needed for advanced television delivery, this area has high priority. The author describes the organization and work of these two organizations to establish a new, advanced television standard
