Abstract :
In this paper, analytical modelling of the operational R-D characteristics that can significantly reduce the computational complexity of an optimal bit allocation algorithm is studied. Two new models namely average distortion-rate function and the low bit rate model are also proposed. Comparative results for operational R-D curve fitting using these two models are presented. Preliminary results show that the exponential-polynomial model often gives a better fit than all the other models studied. Model based bit allocation algorithm employed in an image coding framework gives promising results for overall visual quality.
