  • Abstract
    In December 1986, the Independent Broadcasting Authority (IBA) awarded the first franchise for satellite television broadcasting in the UK to British Satellite Broadcasting (BSB). The contract will have a 15-year term from the start of transmission in 1989 and will cover the use of three DBS channels. The EBU D-MAC transmission standard will be used and the project is now in the final planning stage. An investigation has therefore been started by BSB, in conjunction with the IBA, to enable an accurate practical picture to be built up of the kind of installation needed by the consumer to obtain the desired technical quality of the received picture and sound services. The provision of low-cost consumer equipment is an important element in this work
