Abstract :
FM TV signals represent an increasing proportion of satellite traffic and this trend can be expected to continue. Satellite capacity is expensive and so BTRL has been investigating ways of increasing the bandwidth efficiency of FM TV transmission. The aim is to allow four TV signals (each accompanied by at least two high quality sound signals) to be carried on four separate FM carriers in FDM by one 36 MHz transponder, instead of the maximum of two possible with PAL. Ideally, the increase in receiver dish size for overall quality comparable with half transponder PAL should be as low as possible. It is also desirable that the processing used to achieve the increased bandwidth efficiency should be as simple as possible to reduce the cost of implementation
