Abstract
Describes the principles behind some of the major format decisions leading to the complete specification for a PAL composite digital video tape recorder. Emphasis is placed upon the choice of realistic parameters upon the choice of realistic parameters to ensure that a rugged and reliable product can be manufactured whilst maintaining a cost effective end result. The adoption of 4fsc sampling, azimuth recording and Miller squared encoding have all contributed to the successful realisation of the design objectives
