Abstract :
The authors report the demonstration of an 8 dB single pass fibre amplifier. The operating wavelength was around 1540 nm and a gain bandwidth product of 9 THz was measured. The pump wavelength was 807 nm and the pump power levels required were within the capability of commercially available semiconductor-laser sources. Bit error rate measurements were carried out for a data rate of 140 mb/s
