Abstract
Discusses whether, if the Poynting theorem or momentum theorem must be obeyed, what will the electromagnetic wave mode be? The result is that all electromagnetic waves must be plane waves. Also for some practical mode such as the electromagnetic wave in rectangular waveguide, the Poynting vector has no physical meaning.
