Abstract :
More than 4000 containers with radioactive wastes were disposed in Massachusetts Bay between 1946 and 1959. Public concern over the fate of those wastes continues to the present. In 1997, a survey was undertaken in a disposal area known as the Former Boston Lightship Dumpsite. An occupied submersible and remotely operated vehicle (ROV) acted as search platforms. Down looking and forward looking sonar´s pinpointed target location. A laser system and video camera imaged the targets for identification. Poor visibility limited the laser system effectiveness. The search failed to encounter any radioactive waste containers. Despite the failure to locate low level radiation containers, the survey succeeded in demonstrating that optical technologies offer a significant complement to down looking and forward looking sonar. Searches for small man-made objects over large water body areas with limited visibility have greater potential for success by using multiple technologies
