    The author describes the relation between standards for professional applications and consumer applications and discusses the pace of change. He also discusses the activities of CMTT in presenting the broadcaster´s requirements such as quality objectives, video coding, bit rates, network bit-error characteristics and BISDN based on ATM (asynchronous transfer mode) transmissions
