Abstract
The main aim of the RACE programme is to develop integrated broadband communications (IBC) for commercial introduction in Europe by 1995. From the outset, IBC has been seen as being based on a broadband integrated services digital network (B-ISDN) conforming to CCITT and other international recommendations and standards. Within RACE a number of individual projects are concerned with IBC development and implementation strategies including one in particular which is specifying the broadband user-network interface (BUNI). A second project, which is part of the pre-normative functional integration group of RACE projects, is known as the BUNI demonstrator and is concerned with demonstrating and verifying the BUNI specification. The authors outline the key issues, major problems and successes of these two projects
