  • Abstract
The authors consider the aspects of ATM introduction in the local network, in particular introduction scenarios and distribution. They describe possible techniques for the access link to customers and explain how these techniques could form part of an evolutionary process. The approach that is nearest to the target ATM network is the fully integrated access and this envisages a fibre directly to the local exchange (LEX) or to a remote unit (RU); such a connection is not likely to be economic for residential customers and for such customers a passive optical network is suggested. They also show how remote units may be used in the local network to achieve fully integrated ATM access to the customer´s premises. They conclude that it is important to consider the complete local network when considering evolution to a broadband ATM network
