Communication support for multi media applications

The emerging high speed networks and multi media services enrich a variety of new applications such as office, engineering, control, administration, teaching, etc. The authors focus on the communication aspects of applications in engineering, in particular in CAM (computer aided manufacturing). They present a concrete multi media scenario. Considering the data streams identified in this application they derive the main requirements for the communication system and describe, what support a communication system has to provide to fulfil these requirements. Based on the discussion of the appropriate communication services and protocols, they propose a high speed communication architecture. Finally a high speed transport system is presented as a foundation for the realisation of the high speed communication system
