    The authors describe the potential application of optical switching systems in broadband networks and discuss the aspects of power consumption and costs. They also describe basic switching principles and specific problems in time division systems with STM (synchronous transfer mode) or ATM (asynchronous transfer mode). Conceptual switching alternatives for optical switching networks as well as their addressing and routing methods are discussed in detail
