  • Abstract
Two protocols involving reservation with contention-based traffic are proposed. Their use for both interactive (voice) and bursty (data) traffic has been considered. The proposed protocols make use of features of the random multiple-access protocol together with features of the reservation protocol to overcome the deficiencies of both. These two protocols can be used equally for both types of traffic, and with both cellular and non-cellular digital radio systems. A detailed explanation of their operation is given, together with the performance of these protocols as determined by means of simulation. Both protocols provide priority for the traffic needs of interactive service and the results obtained show that they exhibit low packet delay for interactive load and a reasonable delay for data. The problem of the hidden terminal is shown to be no longer a problem with the contention traffic when reservation is used to control the transmission
