Abstract
A microcellular scheme appears to be a suitable way to solve the complicated problem of radio communication in dense areas, such as city centres and on some motorways. It implies decreasing the cell size in order to increase frequency reuse, leading to a much higher system capacity. Cell size can be controlled by the power transmitted from the base station. This is particularly useful in going from a large to small cells, however, for minicells and definitely for microcells, other means are needed to control the size of the cell. A series of experiments has been undertaken at the University of Liverpool to investigate the effect of the transmission frequency and the base station antenna height on the cell size. The experiments have been conducted at frequencies of 900, 1500 and 1800 MHz and at three different base station antenna heights 7, 14 and 21 m
