T This research sets out to draw a clear picture of the implementation of communicative teaching in college English classes of Wuhan University of Technology (WHUT) by using an authentic class observation and questionnaires to make an evaluation and then analyze the language teaching situation in order to seek a proper role for CLT in Chinese college English teaching. With questionnaires taken by 283 students, we find that students hold a negative attitude towards CLT and how much the students like communicative activities can vary from person to person due to their different English proficiency. The result of research shows that four major factors affect the implementation of communicative activities in English classes. The paper ends with the discussion of the demerits of the current reform. It is hoped that the further research on CLT evaluation system would be carried out to measure students´ communicative competence and to what degree these systems can encourage CLT implementation in Chinese EFL context.
