Abstract :
Today´s submarine carriers are seeing double and triple digit annual growth on installed submarine cable systems and are faced with the challenge of how to cost-effectively upgrade these systems. Many of the world´s markets are showing up to 100% CAGR in internet traffic, and hence submarine cables are required to expand to multiples of their initial design capacities. Since the cost of installing new submarine cable systems is several hundred million dollars, the motivation for extending the life and capacity of these installed submarine cables is enormous. The use of the newer advanced modulation formats for upgrading submarine systems has shown the potential to meet these upgrade requirements.
