Abstract
It is pointed out that many real-time systems are characterized by strong requirements for their reliability and availability on the one hand, and a long lifetime on the other. To be able to perform operational, functional, and technological modifications on these systems, dynamic system modifications must be supported. The authors cover the most important aspects of this problem and suggest some solutions. Particular attention given to the concept of multiple levels of granularity and to design for modification. It is concluded that the problem is multidimensional and that dynamic system modification must be considered in all phases of the product life cycle
