Abstract :
Router is an intermediate system which connects networks that might be heterogeneous. Installing and configuring the router is very cumbersome and highly technical task. For academic purposes the router simulators are used to simulate the configuration process. In this paper we have studied the contemporary router simulators for their strengths and weaknesses and we have developed a new router simulator, RouterSim, for interior gateway protocol; intermediate system- to-intermediate system (IS-IS) and exterior gateway protocol; border gateway protocol (BGP). The simulators for both protocols are either not available in the contemporary router simulators or costly. The proposed RouterSim is free of cost for the academic purposes that allows students to have hands on practice to configure IS-IS and BGP. It allows viewing configuration steps, configuration commands and the complete topology of the selected routing protocol.
