Abstract :
In response to a need to develop a model which could simultaneously represent signalized surface streets and freeways during congested traffic conditions, the INTEGRATION traffic simulation model was developed. The paper describes how various features have been implemented and what types of findings have been derived from tests using this model. In addition, the types of additional improvements that are expected to be needed to address the growing demands that are being placed on today´s combined traffic control and route guidance simulation models are also discussed. The first part of this paper summarizes the overall design of the INTEGRATION model before it is indicated how various traffic signal and freeway control features are modelled within INTEGRATION. Subsequently, the specific features dealing with traffic congestion are introduced, before the route assignment and route guidance features of the model are presented. Finally, the current status of the model and its related support routines are discussed and further developments are prioritized
