Abstract :
Pedestrian crossings are installed to provide pedestrians with a safe method of crossing the road without incurring excessive delay. The paper considers the effect of urban traffic control (UTC) systems based on TRANSYT or SCOOT on the operation and utility of Pelican crossings and explores ways in which pedestrian delay could be reduced without imposing a significant disbenefit on vehicular traffic
