Abstract
Improvements to the organisation and operation of traffic control maintenance can, obtain rates of return similar to those obtained by other more glamorous projects, and can play a significant role in the alleviation of congestion in towns and cities. In the present paper the organisation and operation of traffic control maintenance are described and discussed under the following headings: fault reporting, processing and inspection; organisation of maintenance and contract arrangements; effect of design and installation on maintenance; and legal considerations
