Abstract
Reliable vehicle detectors are an essential element in traffic surveillance and control. The development of strategies for the improvement of safety and reduction of congestion at intersections often hinges on good quality vehicle detection. The paper concerns microwave vehicle detectors (MVDs). MVDs have been installed at many pelican crossings and temporary traffic signal controlled junctions due to their low cost and ease of installation and maintenance. The paper reports on an investigation, conducted in Edinburgh, into their operational performance
