Abstract
For a greater appreciation of the superior viewing experience of an HDTV 16×9 picture image, it needs to be displayed on a large screen. This, however, places considerable constraints on the level of noise that can be tolerated in the generation, transmission and reception of the signal, since any distortion is much more noticeable on a large screen. Also, because an HDTV signal uses a much wider bandwidth (approximately 30 MHz) than that used by a 625-line system, the presence of any noise within this much wider frequency band could affect the HDTV viewing experience quite differently from noise observed in a 625-line system. Hence the ITV Association Technical Development Laboratory at Manchester has performed a series of subjective assessments to study the effects of the presence of various types of noise in an HDTV signal
