Generation of high quality slow-motion replay using motion compensation

The BBC Design and Equipment Department are designing prototype equipment for the generation of high quality slow-motion sequences. Initially, this equipment will be coupled to the experimental motion estimator in order to demonstrate the potential of this technique in real time. It is anticipated that some re-engineering of the motion estimator will then be carried out in the light of the experimental results, to incorporate some enhancements designed to optimise its performance for use in the slow-motion application. The paper outlines briefly the motion estimation algorithm which has been implemented in hardware and suggests some possible enhancements. The principles of motion-compensated temporal interpolation are discussed and the hardware is described
