Abstract
The radio data system, RDS, was specified by the EBU in 1984 and was developed primarily to assist the radio listener in the task of tuning. A supplement to the RDS specification, describing the enhanced other networks (EON) feature, builds upon the original system to offer even more to the listener: much faster station tuning and identification, and the ability to receive traffic announcements from one station whilst being tuned to another. A method of broadcasting traffic announcements inaudibly in a digitally coded form using a new RDS feature, a traffic message channel (TMC) is under consideration. TMC offers the listener the freedom to access stored messages relevant to his route, without disturbing listeners who don´t need the information
