  • Abstract
Rapidly increasing implementation of digital technology (particularly VLSI for memory and for signal processing) is offering the availability, at a realistic cost, of consumer equipment with a multi-standard capability, thereby reducing the importance of achieving a single technical standard in future systems. The authors consider each of these trends, concluding in the end that the most likely route for standards in the television and consumer electronics fields is towards convergence, but achieved through the flexibility of digital signal processing and after some years of confusion and reorientation in both industry and standardising organisations in the early 90´s
