Abstract
The authors describe experimental real time hardware to increase the field rate for improved television display. The object is to reduce flicker thereby producing more solid and restful pictures. The motion compensation used in this implementation is essential for achieving transparent upconversion. The equipment works in monochrome only for simplicity. The work described was undertaken as part of the European EUREKA high definition television (HDTV) project. They briefly explain the need for an increased field rate and previous work to achieve it. Their hardware is described highlighting its special features. The performance of the equipment is also described with suggestions for further developments
