Abstract
Television in Europe is entering a period of unprecedented change brought about by two factors, the trend towards deregulation and the rapid advances in television technology. With this background Granada Television decided to make a series of programmes aimed at determining how the ordinary viewer would be influenced by these events and their reactions to the new environment. The question was how could this situation be created today? The answer was to transport a village population, with a cross-section or cultural backgrounds, into the mid nineteen-nineties. The technical challenges involved in providing advanced television services in a village environment are addressed
