  • Abstract
No matter how it is approached, the task of building a computer aided system for designing artifacts is fraught with difficulties. Current AI-based techniques offer solutions to some of the problems that have beset application programmers for quite some time. This presentation is a progress report on an on-going work concerned with the application of knowledge-based systems in design. Progress which has been achieved so far towards building such a system is described. The achievements that have been made so far indicate that a powerful design system can be built based on a planning approach. Of course some restrictions are still made, but it is a less restrictive model. By employing modern planning techniques, a much more practical working design system can be realized. The system which has been presented leaves a lot of room for expansion and improvement. Stock management and conformity with standards are very important issues for a manufacturing organization. Development efforts are currently directed to these areas. It paves the way for those seriously concerned with truly integrating information technology with business management
