Other papers in this colloquium describe the background to the JTFPE and the role of the guides. This paper describes Part 8.1 of the series which is entitled “Control and Instrumentation”. The purpose of this guide is to provide guidance to purchasers of power station control and instrumentation (C&I) systems on how to write functional specifications. It is important to keep this in focus; the guide is not intended to provide design advice or to be a tutorial in power station C&I. It is targeted at experienced C&I engineers embarking on the task of writing a specification for power station C&I equipment that must be purchased under the requirements of the EC Utilities Directive
