The authors present some guidance for performance requirements and the necessary steps to establish the final size of a smoothing reactor inductance for a HVDC back-to-back converter. The authors describe different design aspects, which have to be considered for selection of the smoothing reactor size. Due to economic aspects, losses and the electrical performance of the converters have to be optimized
