Abstract :
A retinal prosthesis to treat retinal blindness is being evaluated in clinical trials. This is a prototype device that can provide only rudimentary visual sensation, but does show improvement over total blindness. Artificial vision of higher quality will be require a more advanced system. This paper reviews the state of the art of technology for retinal and neural prostheses. Areas that are reviewed include image acquisition and processing, microelectronics, and microelectrode arrays.
