Abstract :
This literature based paper outlines the role of the principal investigator or lead researcher and the managerial challenges they face in the management and delivery of publicly funded research. The paper suggests that there is a need for a micro level study of the role and in particular the competency requirements for principal investigators given the increasing complexity of their work environment and the challenges put on them by their movement to centre stage of industrial policy. In this context this paper proposes a model for considering principal investigator effectiveness in publicly funded research.
