Abstract
It is possible to exploit the advantages of both optical fibre and electronic technologies by the use of a hybrid optical fibre sensor. This paper describes a project during which a hybrid optical fibre sensor was designed that employed either a capacitive or an inductive primary sensing element and was powered, addressed and interrogated from light carried in a network of optical fibres. The sensor was built such that it was possible to combine a number of similar sensors in a multiplexed configuration
