Abstract :
The author briefly describes the European Strategic Programme for Research and development in Information Technology (ESPRIT), an industrial cooperative program that aims to promote the IT (information technology) industry of the European Community. The European Community adopted the first phase of ESPRIT in 1984 and it was conceived for a 10-year period (1984-93) with three objectives: to provide the European IT industry with the basic technologies it needs to compete in the 1990s, to promote European industrial cooperation in IT, and to contribute to the development of internationally accepted standards
