Abstract
An experimental intrafield threshold codec system based on the discrete cosine transform is described. Because it is designed for data reduction purposes in digital consumer video recorders, emphasis is put on a comparatively low complexity realization. The output rate is adjustable between 5 and 35 Mbit/s, and PAL picture quality is obtained at a datarate of 22 Mbit/s
