Abstract :
A new system based on signal processing methods has been developed and applied to internal partial discharge detection in instrument power transformers. The advantage of this system is its suitability for onsite measurements without disturbing the operation of the power network. First, digital acquisition of a complete 50 Hz signal of high frequency currents taken from the earth connections of a three-phase set of instrument power transformers takes place. Secondly, the signal is analysed by various algorithms allowing the recognition of internal discharges. The system permits onsite detection of partial discharges inside the paper/oil insulation of instrument power transformers from a few hundred of pC. This new method appears very attractive and could be supplemented in further stages with partial discharge pattern recognition or applied to other HV electrical equipment
