Abstract :
Edge detection is an important subfield of computer vision. A variety of edge detection operators have been proposed in literature. Some of them are based on edge template matching, but most of them are based on a combination of methods for the gradient calculation, followed by various thresholding techniques. Other edge detectors use the zero crossings of the second derivative of a function, or the first derivative of a Gauss function with non-maximum suppression of the gradient followed by dynamic thresholding. All these methods have their advantages, but common problems include edges which are more than one pixel wide and edge pixels not detected (gaps in contours). Therefore a new edge detector is proposed which produces edges mostly one pixel wide and without gaps
