Abstract
This paper reviews various powering alternatives for local telecommunications networks comprising copper wires, coaxial cable and optical fibers. It then examines the ongoing evolution of wired and wireless public networks, and the expectations for telecommunications at the beginning of the 21st Century. It concludes with recommendations for efforts of the telecommunications power industry to best support the evolving networks
