Abstract :
Symbolic algebra is supplanting its traditional counterpart as the foundation of numerical methods in engineering. It has allowed production of refined techniques, e.g. new finite elements and improved perturbation methods. While it permits direct solution of some new field problems, its main impact is likely to remain in the creation and refinement of numerical tools. After surveying past applications, currently common systems and languages for computer algebra are reviewed briefly
