Abstract :
Discusses the use of a mixed finite and infinite element scheme to solve the time independent form of Maxwell´s equations in 2D. A new code called SEMS (Swansea Electromagnetic Solver) has been developed with preprocessing, solver and postprocessing facilities to enable a full and useful validation of the technique. The far-fields can be determined directly from the nodal values of the infinite elements but in addition a postprocessing facility has been developed so that they can be computed from surface and/or `volume´ currents within the scatterer. Initial results of far-field are compared with analytic solutions with a view to determining criteria for the discretisation of the scatterer and the relative position of the outer boundary between the finite and the infinite elements. In addition some tentative results concerning the positioning of the centre of radiation for the infinite elements are included
