Abstract
The authors describe and analyse a combined random and reservation multichannel FDMA/TDMA technique which is assigned to operate in accordance with a proposed R-LAN. The effect of CSMA reservation access scheme on the overall delay and throughput performance of the system is studied. Furthermore, packet error management is also examined through the use of ARQ protocols. The results indicate that it is possible to achieve improved throughput and delay performance when compared to a conventional TDMA system, especially at low to moderate traffic loads. It is evident that a system with controllable channel availabilities in conjunction with periodical traffic updating becomes adaptive to traffic variations, and as a result of that the system capacity is utilised more efficiently
