Abstract
Describes the various transmission planning parameters and how they are apportioned within mobile communications systems. The limits that are set on these parameters to provide acceptable speech quality for the customer, be he a fixed or mobile subscriber, are discussed. In some areas the limits are well defined in European and global standards. However, mobile communications networks are introducing new problems for the transmission planner. The combinations of call routing scenarios and network component interactions are numerous. With the introduction of the personal communication network (PCN) concept, where the projected United Kingdom (UK) customer base is twelve million by the turn of the century, the importance of transmission planning for end to end communications quality is obvious
