Abstract
The Metropolitan Police Service intends to replace its current VHF network of divisional and specialist personal radio systems with a network operating on UHF assignments. The re-engineering program involves over 10000 handheld radios and fixed equipment at over 400 sites. The authors reports on recent work carried out to assess the operational and engineering aspects concerned with achieving wide area coverage using a technique known as search, vote and lock which uses an intelligent handheld radio to select the base transmitter offering the best grade of service
