Abstract
The management of the software development process is made difficult by the creative nature of design. The design of a system is really a process of discovery, both by the user and the developer. This is what causes the requirements to evolve and it also means that the system developer is most likely to be in a position to propose the best design just when too many decisions have been taken and it is already too late. This paper explains the various types and sources of complexity inherent in IDA systems and proposes an analysis and specification framework within which they can be addressed
