Abstract
Protocols for telecommunication networks and computer networks are key-elements. A protocol engineering workstation can support the developer to specify, implement and test these protocols. The PROCONSUL (protocol consultant) system developed in Hungary contains a user interface module, several protocol specification modules, conformance testing, simulation and implementation modules and libraries. For large-scale systems, diverse customer needs must be communicated and translated into precise implementations that are consistent with the existing system. The front end of the software development process-from analysis of customer requirements to high level design-is generally time consuming and labour intensive. This paper discusses a CAPE (computer aid for protocol engineering) technology developed for protocol engineering
