Abstract
The Rover Group factory information system (FIS) project has demonstrated that a management information system which meets users´ needs for access to existing data in a wide variety of production systems can be built with standard, well proven technology in a short time. This paper explains the background to the project; it then lists the project objectives and critical success factors and describes the stages that the project has gone through. The resulting system is then described, followed by an outline of the Project Team organisation, the software, hardware and communications in use. Emphasis is given to those tools and techniques which contributed to early implementation
