Abstract :
The author reviews the NASA Airframe Structural Integrity Program (ASIP) and focuses on the role of nondestructive evaluation (NDE). Examples of advanced ultrasonic, thermal wave, photoacoustic, and acoustic emission approaches are presented. It is concluded that the measurement science technologies have advanced to a capability that warrants a review of QNDE (quantitative NDE) applications to in-service inspection of aircraft. Visual NDE is highly regarded and successful in today´s environment. However, there are opportunities to integrate new tools and to use new analysis to extract more quantitative information from existing (or modified) technologies
